McFarlane Toys – Warhammer Action Figures

Last Updated on November 10, 2020 by FauxHammer

So wow! last week’s “new releases” post went a bit crazy – I think the entire community went a bit crazy. Games Workshop shouted, “Do you Want Indomitus?” We responded with a warcry, powerful enough to shake the foundations of the wargames domain of the internet!

From 09:59 on Saturday the 11th, if you went to pretty much any online wargames store, you were greeted with the same responses. Error 503 – Web Service Unavailable! getting a preorder in for Indomitus was less of a who was fastest but it was – who was luckiest to get all the way through to the checkout without the page dying again. I had 4 stores open in separate tabs pressing F5 like crazy and whoever was first to let me through got my money.

Then over the next few days, rumours of a second wave popped up and stores started listing new stock available in August… (they lasted about 2 hours) Then GW went back to the drawing board and a couple of days into the week realised just how many upset people there were – so now they are taking orders upfront to make sure they make enough, online Hobby stores are allowed to offer this too – but only till the last day of this month.

So if you couldn’t get it last week, and you still want a copy of Indomitus this year! Be ready to part with your money for 5 months whilst you wait… But you can get it for as low as £100 (check our list of stores stocking it)

If you’re wanting to know what’s up for pre-order this week? – I’m here to tell you. But you’d get the same answer if you asked what War is good for? “Absolutely Nothing, Listen to me!

McFarlane Toys – Warhammer Action Figures

So instead, as I was browsing the web seeing if there is anything new – It struck me that I’d missed something! The upcoming Warhammer Action Figures from McFarlane Toys!

McFarlane Toys Space Marine Warhammer 40k 7 Figure 6

Why didn’t GW announce the preorder for these? Well, it looks like they are going through the same distribution Channels McFarlane toys use and follow the McFarlane release process rather than GW”s week before release announcements. McFarlane put their toys up for preorder months in Advance. (probably to gauge production demand all the way up to release).

Though, Other than the Lights, Camera… Action Figures! post from Warhammer Community, GW has been pretty quiet about these, there’s been no further info, no specifications, they never even told us the release date. Well…

The Release Date for the McFarlane Warhammer Action Figures is October 1st 2020. Shall we have a look?

McFarlane Toys – Warhammer Action Figure range

First up, there are 3, for now. In the above mentioned Warhammer Community post, it was said that these are just “the first [three] figures from what promises to be a larger line. (YAY!)” These 3 include

Ok, I get that one is unpainted so that we can paint it, but I’m going to paint the painted ones too – so honestly having an unpainted model is actually saving the manufacturer some money, interesting that the unpainted model is the same price as the painted one. oooh, you cheeky…..

McFarlane Warhammer Space Marine Primaris Intercessor AP 1

To be fair though. It’s a decent quirk that would only work with a model based on the Warhammer franchise. Do you remember the unpainted Warhhamemr pop figure? It was Identical to the Primaris Intercessor Games Pop! and that sold out in a day and sold for crazy scalper prices on eBay whilst the Painted ultramarine was still readily available.

Speaking of other types of Warhammer Figures, let’s have a look at the Bandai model

Mcfarlane Space Marine Vs Bandai Space Marine

So, we all know that GW made 9000 fully-posable Space Marine Action figures (again, they sold out in a day) at a really high price point. So with these being only a quarter of the Price – what’s the difference. well. I made this handy grid to tell you. (Comparing Both Ultramarines, and thee Intercessors made by GW for a laugh)

First of all – the McFarlane price point is much easier to swallow. It’s also kinda nice that for once the US is getting Warhammer products cheaper than the UK (but McFarlane is an American Company), well it’s nice for you lot! not for me… In saying that, you can still get the Bandai Model on eBay for over double the RRP! and people are paying it!

I did look to find what these McFarlane toys are made of – couldn’t figure it out. But they are a soft bendy type of plasticy stuff. Could be called some special kind of resiny polymer thing – no idea. But they aren’t solid like the Bandai marines are. Basically, you won’t get such crisp edges with the McFarlane Series

The McFarlane Figure is an inch shorter with less than half as many points of articulation. With the Bandai models, you could swivel body parts down to the wrist and ankle joints down to angle and rotation. Even the Shoulder pads would angle independently from the arms.

The Bandai Space Marine Toy came with a separate Backpack, Bolt Rife, Combat Knife and 4 Additional hands. The McFarlane Ultramarine comes with a Chain Sword and Bolt Pistol. If you want the Signature Bolt Rifle, you need the unpainted version.

The thing we don’t know yet is how limited these are. The Bandai model sold out before they were even made (again – in a day). With these, no idea what the stock levels are…. But I’m gonna pre-order now. Actually, I want to pre-order two of each. One to keep in the box and one to paint. Or maybe 3 so I can also have one out of the box in original colours. But then, don’t I need ones I can paint in each of the main Space Marine chapters?

Hang on – I need to go order before my wife see’s what I’m thinking. We won’t need food in October right? not “all” of October surely?

Warhammer Action Figures Models – McFarlane Toys

McFarlane Toys are one of the world’s premier toy companies. Named for its creator Todd McFarlane and was initially started by making sculpts of his own comic series, Spawn. (I like the original movie. don’t judge)

McFarlane Toys Warhammer 40k Necron 7 Action Figure 6

Over the years they have partnered with numerous other brands to make models for Movies, TV Shows, Video Games & More.

Back in the day, I had (actually I still have somewhere) a decent collection of Spawn figures (I never even read the comic, they were just that cool), along with some of The Metal Gear Solid figures and the Whole MGS 2 Collection (why did that partnership end!).

The details on their toys are pretty incredible, whilst they are in the form of action figures they are more meant for people to pose & display, rather than play with them making pew-pew noises. They fit that perfect balance between action-figure and sculped model.

So, lets have a look at these upcoming models in detail.

McFarlane Toys – Ultramarines Primaris Assault Intercessor

Here’s the Primaris Ultramarine Assault Intecessor and his components. agree with me that you would have preferred a stand which is more in scale with the bases we are used to?

McFarlane Toys Space Marine Warhammer 40k 7 Figure 7

What is it about third parties and Aquilas? (the Chest Wings). Why can’t anyone get them to match the dimensions we already have? GW has the 3d Model of A Space Marine chest, just use that. This is one part of the model that puts me off. Why couldn’t they just make it the same but bigger!

Is it a licensing thing?

McFarlane Toys Space Marine Warhammer 40k 7 Figure 1

Other than that the proportions of the marine look pretty spot on.

Though the Pistol and the Chain Sword look a bit small

McFarlane Toys Space Marine Warhammer 40k 7 Figure 2

Not sure what the cross is about on the wrist? It’s some nice ornamentation but going to this level of detail on one hand is great, but the rest of the armour components now feel a bit sparse

McFarlane Toys Space Marine Warhammer 40k 7 Figure 3

The backpack again is fairly spot-on, though I’m not sure why the vents are shallower than we’d expect

McFarlane Toys Space Marine Warhammer 40k 7 Figure 4

At least we have the correct markings on the shoulders. If this is squad 4 here’s hoping we get the other 3 at some point.

McFarlane Toys Space Marine Warhammer 40k 7 Figure 5

And as they said, he looks fairly posable too even though he has fewer points of articulation than the Bandai version

McFarlane Toys – Necron Warrior

next lets take a look at the Necron, who comes with the new Gauss Flayer and a Scarab (the latter of which i have not noticed in the pics up til now)

McFarlane Toys Warhammer 40k Necron 7 Action Figure 7

I don;t know about you, but i feel less inspired by Necron Sculpts in general, be they 7″ or 32mm, there’s not much interesting detail here,

McFarlane Toys Warhammer 40k Necron 7 Action Figure 1

The Gauss Flayer looks like it has warped along the barrel, but this is something I’m used to with McFarlane Models as the plastic is quite soft and bendy

McFarlane Toys Warhammer 40k Necron 7 Action Figure 2

It also doesn’t look like there are any interesting points of articulation on this one either

McFarlane Toys Warhammer 40k Necron 7 Action Figure 3

Dunno what else to say, here’s the back.

McFarlane Toys Warhammer 40k Necron 7 Action Figure 4

and the other side

McFarlane Toys Warhammer 40k Necron 7 Action Figure 5

As for posing, we’ve lost some dynamicism here when compared to the Primaris model. It looks like to can pose him with a narro or wide stance, Gaus Flayer Pointing up or down. and turn the head a but.

I admit, necrons just aren’t my thing.

McFarlane Toys – Unpainted Space Marine Primaris Intercessor

And finally, the Unpainted Intercessor which will likely be the most popular of the whole range so far.

McFarlane Warhammer Space Marine Primaris Intercessor AP 8

Again with the improperly proportioned aquilla, not that I expceted this to be different to the painted version – I think this will be standard going forward.

McFarlane Warhammer Space Marine Primaris Intercessor AP 1

I’m wondering here how i’m going to paint this.

McFarlane Warhammer Space Marine Primaris Intercessor AP 3

In my experience, McFarlane models do not come apart very easily so painting this chap could be tricky with parts flailing about.

McFarlane Warhammer Space Marine Primaris Intercessor AP 2

I wnder if the backpack comes off?

McFarlane Warhammer Space Marine Primaris Intercessor AP 6

I can see it would be so much fun to paint a few of these, maybe one each for my fave chapters. I can’t wait to see what the community does with them and some conversions would be awesome. Robed Dark Angels, Space Wolf Pelts & Runes, Blood Angel Ornamentation – Even a cool Chaos Marine!

Someone make this happen please before GW does?

McFarlane Warhammer Space Marine Primaris Intercessor AP 7

Again these guys still look pretty posable and even parts like the toes will angle up for a dynamic pose.

Hey Siege Studios! Can we have an action Figure category at next year’s ironSkull? (Help me out everyone, go ask them to do it)

McFarlane Toys – Warhammer Action Figure Availability

As of right now, it’s all about Amazon – no matter what country you are in, this link will take you to all 3 of the models.

In the UK, you can also order from Forbidden Planet, though they will charge you for postage too (it’s not per item, it’s the same postage cost whether you order 1 or 100!)

But I haven’t seen these pop up on any of our own online Hobby Stores as yet, correct me if I’m wrong…

Just like the Board Game – Space Marine Adventures (which was exclusive to Game retail stores in the UK) – This is also more of a gateway product to pull in people who are into similar products. It may Turn up in your Local Warhammer or other hobby stores, but the supply lines for these are very different from what Games Workshop and many of their retail partners use.

No Matter if you Order from Amazon or Forbidden Planet, you won’t be charged until the item is ready to ship. So it may be worth queueing this up on your orders list now before the stock levels disappear (could happen, no idea)- you can always edit the quantity or remove them later.

What do you think of these new models? Whilst I love my fighty spacemen, I’d love to see some Sigmarines and such next. (Also shhh, don’t tell my wife, but between us, how many of these should I buy?) let us know in the comments?
