Last Updated on May 18, 2022 by FauxHammer

No, just no. sorry. The scene in Robin Hood Men in Tights comes to mind when I have to deliver bad news in a good way. So here we go…. ha ha ha haha. So, the most hilarious and wonderful thing happened. and, well, hahahaha, you won’t believe this. It’s so good! Necromunda Underhive was just confumoured (a made-up portmanteau of confirmed and rumoured) to be retailing at £180! ($299, €225) how incredibly amazing is that? Bwahahhahahahaah. So good right…. is that not the best news you’ve heard all week?

(Cue Prince John): What are you CRAZY! WHY ARE YOU LAUGHING!? This is terrible news.

Necromunda: Ash Wastes Price, Value and Savings Summary

You’re probably shocked by the price of this set. I don’t blame you. I was talking with Brushstroke last night as the price news dropped and I immediately exclaimed. No – it’s just not happening, At first, I thought it was wrong. I’ll check the sources later on. But then Valrak reported on it as confirmed, I know he does his homework – so I’ll take that as gospel.

But looking back today I realised that I had begun to go through the 7 stages of grief in response to this news. Today with a fresh head I came into writing this article ready to slate the price. But when you take more of the individual elements into account. Things start to make (a bit of) sense. Read on for the detail, but here’s a summary table of the Price, Value and Savings for Necromunda: Ash Wastes

GBPUSDCADEURAUD
Orlocks Value£56.00$94.00$112.00€74.00$140.00
Nomads Value£56.00$94.00$112.00€74.00$140.00
Terrain Value£110.00$185.00$220.00€145.00$279.00
Total Value£222.00$373.00$444.00€293.00$559.00
Extras Value*£95.50$145.50$189.00€118.75$247.00
Total + Extras£317.50$518.50$633.00€411.75$806.00
Necromunda: Ash Wastes Price£180.00$299.00$360.00€225.00$475.00
Total Savings£42.00$74.00$84.00€68.00$84.00
Savings Percentage19%20%19%23%15%
Total Savings (Incl Extras)£137.50$219.50$273.00€186.75$331.00
Savings Percentage (Incl Extras)43%42%43%45%41%
*Extras refer to things like Dice, Cards and the Rulebook

On the surface, a locale-ranging average of a 20% saving is not the best, far from it.

Games Workshop’s big-box releases tend to drop with a rough 35%-40% saving on plastic alone. And with this set, you need to ask yourself whether this terrain is worth the same as the terrain you got back in Dark Uprising – scale-wise, it doesn’t appear to.

In order to get anywhere near that 40% saving, you need to include the extras such as cards, dice and the rulebook. (which we’ve never done in a value breakdown before).

The numbers here echo the community roar of “No, I won’t be buying this one”.

Necromunda: Ash Wastes

Ash Wastes brings vehicular combat to Necromunda. I was super excited about this when it was announced. But I’ll be honest, with experience of Gorkamorka and Speed Freeks, I was expecting that combat to be a lot more V8’s in the 41st millennium.

Kinda Gaslands on a larger scale with a 40k flavour. I did expect actual cars, mounted weapons and makeshift armour panels mounted over a steel roll cage.

But instead, we have a few dune buggies and antlions roving around.

NMAshWastesSetting Apr15 Terrain3

I’m sorry if I’m already a bit sour on this. We can’t all love the same thing.

But I just want my 40k V8 Pursuit Special GT Falcon. and so do you.

Necromunda: Ash Wastes Release Date

Well, this one is nice and easy. Warhammer Community announced it this week in their Sunday Preview.

Necromunda: Ash Wastes is going on preorder this Saturday, April 30th 2022. And will be released the following week on Saturday, May 7th 2022

Necromunda: Ash Wastes Price

Oh, well. here’s the rub. There’s a hefty price tag attached to this one. Necromunda aficionados may not be too surprised. After all Dark Uprising came at a very similar price point. In fact, there’s only a 3% difference (approx across locales) between Ash Wastes and Dark Uprising. Far lower than the 10%-20% increase we were informed of by GW earlier this year, the increase that came into effect on March 7th 2022.

Before I say more, here’s the rumoured (but solidly confirmed) price point. and for fairness of comparison, I’ve included the Dark Uprising price back from November 2019. Two-and-a-half years ago.

GBPUSDCADEURAUD
Necromunda: Ash Wastes£180.00$299.00$360.00€225.00$475.00
Necromunda: Dark Uprising£175.00$290.00$350.00€230.00$490.00
% Difference2.8%3%%-2.2%%

You, whilst this has immediately shocked many a Warhammer Community member, myself included, to the point of “yeah, Nah”. comparatively, it’s not that much more than the former Necromunda Flagship. The difference is arguably pittance.

Many of us are still looking at the more recent Hive War starter box. Which had a far more typical price point when compared to game’s Workshop’s usual fare of big-box releases.

Whilst there’s a good chunk of stuff in here, the main cost is in the included scenery. Though, whilst this is a somewhat sprawling array of habs and walkways. It’s just not that dense and the product photos do not do well to indicate the actual scale.

It looks like a lot of money for not very much stuff. So let’s break it down.

Necromunda: Ash Wastes Value

Below we have done a summary of each gang. Along with the estimated value of the included scenery components. To Summarise;

GBPUSDCADEURAUD
Orlocks Value£56.00$94.00$112.00€74.00$140.00
Nomads Value£56.00$94.00$112.00€74.00$140.00
Terrain Value£110.00$185.00$220.00€145.00$279.00
Total Value£222.00$373.00$444.00€293.00$559.00
Extras Value*£95.50$145.50$189.00€118.75$247.00
Total + Extras£317.50$518.50$633.00€411.75$806.00
*Extras refer to things like Dice, Cards and the Rulebook

As noted we have both the value and value with “extras” included above. – see below for details. We never normally do this, we normally assume those bits as free and just look at piles of plastic. It’s not to artificially inflate the value here. just as another point for you to compare.

See below for the validation of each Item but I genuinely think the main issue here is the terrain. I’ve used the later release Hive Warzone set (the scenery from Dark Uprising) to infer the scenery value here.

but in all honesty, and I’m sure you’ll agree. the scenery in this set does not appear to be worth anywhere near as much as the scenery from Dark Uprising. not even by half.

So the value question for potential buyers becomes less about its numerical figure and more about what this Elevated Habitat Scenery means to you.

Necromunda: Ash Wastes – Nomads Value

Pretty standard fayre here. A new gang, which already have a standard value across the Necromunda range, and a vehicle set.

GBPUSDCADEURAUD
Nomad Gangers£28.00$47.00$56.00€37.00.00$70.00
Nomad Dustback Helamites£28.00$47.00$56.00€37.00.00$70.00
Total Value£56.00$94.00$112.00€74.00$140.00

The vehicle set prices have leaked along with the Boxed set price. and they mirror the price of each gang set.

Necromunda: Ash Wastes – Orlocks Value

As above, we have 2 sets here, each with that standard price.

GBPUSDCADEURAUD
Orlock Gangers£28.00$47.00$56.00€37.00.00$70.00
Orlock Outrider Quads£28.00$47.00$56.00€37.00.00$70.00
Total Value£56.00$94.00$112.00€74.00$140.00

Do you think this 2-vehicle set is worth this? I don’t think it’s too bad. As with the Nomads, you still get 4 individuals spread over the vehicles.

Necromunda: Ash Wastes – Terrain Value

Aww, this! I need to explain how this is worked out because working out Necromunda Terrain is an absolute mess. As of now, there are a few terrain sets available for Necromunda. However, the price of this set is comparable to Dark Uprising. It’s not unfair to look at that set as a baseline to estimate what this one should cost. (we’ll talk about its “worth” after)

Ash Wastes

Thankfully with Dark Uprising, that scenery set alter came out separately as the “Zone Mortalis: Hive Warzone”.

GBPUSDCADEURAUD
Ash Wastes: Elevated Habs£110.00$185.00$220.00€145.00$279.00

And that’s 2020 prices. Without the expected price increase. But here’s the bit where I think people are getting upset. In Dark Uprising and subsequently the Zone Mortalis: Hive Warzone, you got the following.

Dark Uprising

That set was so big they even made this cool gif showcasing just how much stuff you got. Over 17 sprues you got;

  • Play Mat
  • 2 Stairs
  • 16 Platforms
  • 2 Wide Platforms
  • 4 Ladders
  • 1 Lift
  • 12 Columns
  • 2 Wide Wall
  • 8 Walls
  • 2 Wide Doors
  • 2 Doors
  • 6 Pipes
  • 2 Control Points
  • 2 Broken Pipe Sections
  • 4 Curved Pipe Sections
  • 2 Short End Pipes
  • 1 Gang Relic
  • 1 Priority Marker
  • 1 Beast’s Lair
  • 5 Loot Casket/Crate
  • 9 Barricades
  • 4 Booby Traps

But here… In the Ash wastes… Well, look again at the images above. It just doesn’t look very much at all on the surface of it.

Again though, maybe it’s just the lack of scale in the images shown.

Necromunda: Ash Wastes – Extras Value

So, I’ve never done this before. I generally focus on the models in the box, but with this specific set, as it’s being heavily questions I’ve included them below as another comparative element…

Normally we just assume all of this stuff is essentially free. Even with Indomitus & Dominion, we never include the rulebook in the value. let alone some small plastic cubes of fate. (we mean ‘dice’ mate).

I’m not trying to overinflate the value of this set. I’ve separated this clearly throughout so you can see the value as we normally compare it, and with the following include. Maybe this will swing it for you, maybe not.

GBPUSDCADEURAUD
Necromunda: Hardback Rulebook£37.50$60.00$75.00€50.00$98.00
Necromunda Cards*£33.00$49.50$66.00€39.75$81.00
Dice**£25.00$36.00$48.00€29.00$68.00
Total Value£95.50$145.50$189.00€118.75$247.00
* 89 Cards – Split over Faction, Campaign and Blacks (value equivalent of 3 retail (26-card) packs)
** 16 dice (value equivalent of 2 Necromunda dice packs – when they were available)

Even with all this we still have not included the value of the range ruler blast markers, tokens or the game mat. so that’s some more for you.

Necromunda: Ash Wastes Price, Value and Savings – Final Thoughts

Unless you are already well invested in Necromunda, this probably isn’t for you. I can’t see any beginner wanting to part with this much money for any starter set.

These big-box releases normally drop as significant loss-leaders for Games Workshop. A solid starter set with huge savings over the individual components within. But here. I just can’t see that value being in place. Nowhere near.

Especially through the scenery, you get here. A staple of the Necromunda game. It looks big in its scale but not all that dense. Especially when compared to the preceding Dark Uprising box.

As for me, I’m a reviewer and I was gonna pick this one up myself (since Rob has no interest in Necromunda) But at this price… for this stuff… I’m sorry. but no.

On a personal level, this has me asking myself what else I could buy for £180. Rob and I discussed it last night. Here are a few ideas we (mostly he) came up with.

  • New Monitor
  • High-End PC Components
  • Decent Beginners Guitar
  • Decent Headphones
  • Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition
  • A decent wood Planer
  • An Awesome Night Out
  • A family day out + meal.

I wouldn’t say it, but this is the first thing I’ve seen in a long time that’s made me actually look at how much I’d spend. And all it does is make me look at my other hobbies and think, this would be better spent elsewhere.

Professionally, we just can’t afford it. and that’s saying something. This is the first boxed set since Indomitus (almost 2 years) that we probably won’t be reviewing. Not that we don’t want to, but as it appears right now, we just can’t afford to. Especially with Horus Heresy a little over a month away. With Heresy’s rumoured price point being over £200 for the flagship box and subsequent boxes to follow. We need to make a cost/value analysis for the health of the site.

I may pick this up in a few months if a few places discount them to sell off excess stock (like many places did with Dominion). But I’m not a Necromunda player right now and thus doesn’t turn me on to it, it just puts me off. what about you?
