Warhammer Age of Sigmar 3rd Edition Dominion Starter Sets Compared

Last Updated on August 24, 2021 by FauxHammer

Wow, Game’s Workshop is at war, against our wallets! It was only a week ago really that we published our Warhammer Dominion Review and now, hot on the heels (and fully expected/predicted) we now have a trio of new starter sets. Dominion itself is still available at the time of writing this article, so if you are looking to get into the Age of Sigmar, then that is still the (overwhelmingly) best value place to start. Today we are going to compare the three new Warhammer Age of Sigmar Starter Sets – Warrior, Harbinger & Extremis Editions.

So yeah, Dominion is a limited release. What has been made and shipped and is in stock around the world is all there will ever be.

Dominion as a box however is not aimed at absolute beginners. there is no quick how to play game guide. There are no rulers and no dice. no game board included, not even a paper mat. Dominion is a gift aimed at existing Age of Sigmar Players. It’s a huge value box intended to get existing players into the Third Edition of the game. But let’s be fair, even if you are new, you will likely learn the rules from a mate locally anyway. So get Dominion whilst you can.

These new boxes

We previously had a similar breakdown of versions with Soul Wars (2nd Edition) in the form of 3 named boxes; Soul Strike (is succeded by Warrior Edition), Tempest of Souls (succeded by Harbinger Edition) and Warhammer Age of Sigmar: Soul Wars (Now Extremis Edition). It’s similar to Dark Imperium/Indomitus too.

There’s a bit of a change-up in the approach with these, previously, each version would come with more models. Now, Extremis Edition (the Flagship) is just Harbinger Edition but with some terrain and a Cardboard playing matt.

We’ll be reviewing each of these sets independently in the coming weeks

Let’s take a Closer Look at The sets

Warhammer Age of Sigmar Paint Sets

As a quick aside, Games Workshop just announced three new paint sets. one for each of the factions featured in Warhammer Age of Sigmar 3rd edition. and a Paints and toolset for the Complete Beginner.

Warhammer Age of Sigmar Stormcast Vindictors Paint Set

Gonna say this right up front, if you care about your painting quality at all, please don’t buy this.

it’d decent value for the paints, but the clippers are awful, the brush is equivalent to something your kids would get in a £1 watercolour paint set and the mould line removal is an uncomfortable half-tool

Do yourself an immediate favour, get one of any of GW’s other brushes, some fine nose snips from any DIY store and a hobby knife.

Check out this list here for the Best brushes, but as a budget-conscious beginner, just get something from GW like a M Layer Brush for now. and check out this list of essential tools for time on the other bits.

Warhammer Age of Sigmar Stormcast Vindictors Paint Set

This new Paint Set contains 2 Models and 6 Paints – which should be enough to get you started.

Warhammer Age of Sigmar Vindictors Paint Set Contents

It’s a simple basic set, again the brush is trash, but it’s enough to get you started with your Stormcast force allowing for some decent base layers and basic shading.

Warhammer Age of Sigmar Kruleboyz Gutripaz Warriors Paint Set

The Orruk Set features 3 models and 6 paints. including one of the new paints released specifically for this edition

Warhammer Age of Sigmar Orruk Paint Set

Once again, I hate this brush and you will too. but it’s still a decent price for a bunch of paints that will have your Orruks battle-ready.

The thing I care about in both sets is the models. The Vindicators themselves distinct poses. The Orruks are also kinda unique when compared to their Dominion counterparts.

They really are some good start painting sets. with only 6 paints in each, you now have everything you really need to get some base colours on these models, get a wash on them and even some texture paint for the base. Although, all of these are in 12 ml pots, unlike the retail texture paints and washes which now come in 24ml.

Personally, as I have the paints, I’ll skip these as I expect those models may be released as separate “easy to build” kits of just the 2/3 models in each. Just like we had with 2nd Edition.

Warhammer Age of Sigmar Starter Sets Warrior Vs Harbinger Vs Extremis.

Starting off with a few Comparison Charts so you can know what you get in each set.

Warhammer Age of Sigmar Starter Sets – Contents Per Edition

Just a quick overview of the different sprues of models you get in the sets (for a better breakdown of the models you get per sprue – please see our Warhammer Age of Sigmar Dominion Review

Warhammer Age of Sigmar Starter Sets – Sprues

This bit is for those of you who have Dominion and want a quick overview of how the new sets are broken down using Dominion as a base.

Warhammer Age of Sigmar Starter Sets – Models

Ok, let’s get into the meat of it, the models themselves – I’ve broken this down into two tables, Stormcast & Orruks

Stormcast Eternals

Stormcast Vindictorsx5x5x5x10
Knight-Arcanumx1x1
Lord-Imperatant with Gryph Houndx1x1x1
Praetorsx3x3x3

So in each starter set, you get 5 Vindicators (Vs Dominion’s 10) and 10 Gutrippaz.

With The Warrior Edition you get the Knight-Arcanum and Killaboss with Stab-Grot, With Harbinger & Extremis you don’t get those models but instead, you get the Lord-Imperatant with Gryph Hound & Swampcalla Shaman with Pot-Grot along with the Praetors & Hobgrot Slittaz.

Warhammer Age of Sigmar Starter Sets – Extras

So there are a few other bits you get in these sets

Warhammer Age of Sigmar Starter Sets – Warrior Edition

So here’s your entry-level (aka Stocking filler) for those who just want some more models to paint

Price: £32.50, $50(USD), €40

This is the basic kit for anyone who wants just a taste of playing Warhammer Age of Sigmar, 2 Small Squads and a leader for each faction

One slight bonus to these starter sets is that along with a fold-out mat, the box also becomes part of the terrain on your battlefield

Warhammer Age of Sigmar Starter Sets – Harbinger Edition

The mid-tier is likely to be the most popular of the new sets as this comes with 2 larger armies now including the Praetors and Grots.

Price £65, $99(USD), €80

Again, the box can be used as terrain – this is brilliant as a starter set.

The price point for this one is just right for those who really want to get into Warhammer Age of Sigmar but can’t quite afford the Extremis Set – But if you’re new and this price puts you off – please don’t look at how much some individual models and squads may cost in the future.

Seriously don’t look.

Look away.

LOOK AWAY!

Warhammer Age of Sigmar Starter Sets – Extremis Edition

Finally “Extremis Edition” is the new flagship of the range. These editions are better names than their 40k counterparts where Elite was mid-tier and Command was top-tier. Elite by definition alone should be the ultimate set. But whateves.

If you are looking for a franchise where words make sense, Warhammer is not it.

Price: £105, $165(USD), €130

Unlike the previous versions, there are no more models here. This is the Same as Harbinger Edition but you get a hardback (180-page) rulebook, a game board and some terrain.

Again a really great set and if you know you are committed to Warhammer Age of Sigmar this is a great starter set for you to wage tabletop war

Warhammer Age of Sigmar Starter Sets – Price & Availability

First up, let’s have a look at the prices.

The prices below are based on RRP, use our links below the availability section to get up to 20% off.

Please note we are counting each labelled sprue separately, for example, the Knight -Arcanum and the Killaboss are two sprues, even though they come joined. The term “Model” refers to any individual unit with its own base.

The Terrain in the Extremis Edition has been ignored in the “cost per model”.

So price-wise you can really see the value in these sets. On the base level the Warrior Edition looks a steal as you are getting a large number of models at quite a low value per model, just remember – Rank and File are normally the cheapest.

The comparison above is quite crude and as such unfair. Especially in regard to Dominion value. But that’s because we have stripped this down to the barest of comparisons here, a single model divided by the cost of the set.

It does not take into account the value of these models in-game or the value of an equivalent model individually. The missing sprues between Harbinger/Extremis and Dominion contain some of the more formidable units. Some of these individual units would easily retail at £20 ($25 USD) – £25 ($35 USD) each!

We already did a brief comparison of the costs in our Dominion review, but here it is again for reference

So, whilst these are based on Estimates (especially on the Orruk side as we don’t have many comparable unit prices yet), it really puts into perspective the value of the boxed sets above and what each sprue is worth were you to buy those models individually.

All of a sudden, that Dominion box is looking much more valuable!!! There are places still selling it. So if you can, bag a copy now!

Needs an edit. Far too many references to necrons, skorpekh lords etc. This is AoS, not 40k
