How to Paint Miniature Horses – Recipies
How to paint Black Horses

Skin
- Prime black
- Base coat in Abaddon Black
- Layer raised areas in Eshin Grey
- Highlight with Dawnstone Grey
- Wash all over with NuIn Oil
Tail & Mane
- Basecoat Abaddon Black
- Drybrush Dawnstone Grey
- Wash all over with NuIn Oil
- Light drybrush Dawnstone Grey
Applying the wash at the end of the painting process will tie the colours together and make the transitions smoother. It can, however, result in a gloss finish. Matt varnish will fix this.
How to paint Grey Horses

Skin
- Prime black
- Basecoat in Eshin Grey
- Base again in Dawnstone
- Recess shade with Agrax Earthshade
- Highlight with Administratum Grey
Tail & Mane
- Basecoat Abaddon Black
- Drybrush Dawnstone Grey
- Wash all over with NuIn Oil
- Light drybrush Dawnstone Grey
Painting Eshin Grey before Dawnstone grey allows for easier coverage. The jump straight from black to Dawnstone can be difficult to get consistent coverage with a brush.
How to paint Dark Brown Horses

Skin
- Prime black
- Basecoat in Rhinox Hide
- Layer raised areas in Doombull Brown
- Wash all over with Agrax Earthshade
- Highlight with Doombull Brown
Tail & Mane
- Basecoat Abbadon Black
- Drybrush Dawnstone Grey
- Wash all over with NuIn Oil
- Light drybrush Dawnstone Grey
If you’re not confident in layering the horse skin you can heavy drybrush Doombull Brown for step 2 and then light drybrush again for step 5. You won’t get as smooth a finish though.
How to paint Tan Horses

Notes-Applying the wash at the end of the painting process will tie the colours together and make the transitions smoother. It can, however, result in a gloss finish. Matt varnish will fix this.

How to paint Dead horses

- Wash all over with thinned Biel-tan Green (1 part Biel-tan Green : 4 parts Lahmian Medium)
