Warhammer Age of Sigmar Stormbringer Delivery 4: Issues 11-14 Review – Introduction

In the same month Warhammer 40,000: Imperium came to its end, Warhammer Age of Sigmar: Stormbringer is beginning to hit its stride. Hobbyists will be relieved that their steady influx of new miniatures to paint and models to game with will not be ceasing any time soon.

And it’s a good month for models, too. Read on for our round-up of everything that has or is hitting shelves in May 2023.

Warhammer Age of Sigmar Stormbringer Delivery 4: Issues 11-14 Review – Contents

With a few models, some new paints, and a whole host of stuff to be getting on with in the magazines themselves, Delivery 4 brings your plenty of stuff to be getting on with. We’ll have a proper look at it all now.

The Magazines

First off, we’ll have a relatively spoiler-free look at the four magazines in this month’s delivery. Delivery 11 kicks things off with a few sides of lore on Excelsis, one of Sigmar’s bastions in Ghur, before splitting the remainder of the magazine between building and painting the Beast-Skewer Killbow and the ever-developing gaming rules.

Issue 12 teaches readers about Realmgates and their importance to the Mortal Realms before taking a quick deep-dive into the Kruleboyz’s backstory. The latter three-quarters of the magazine is all about your new Stormstrike Chariot – whether building, painting or playing with the model in your games.

As suggested by its cover art, Issue 13 takes readers underwater into the dark depths of the Mortal Realms’ oceans for a look at the monsters that dwell there, before tossing you back on dry land for a short story, and a snippet of info on Ghur itself. There’s also a hefty painting guide for getting your current collection of models up to standard using your new paints, and then a further playthrough at the back to be getting on with.

Also included in Issue 13 is a fold-out focussed on the armies of Order – complete with a huge cinematic photo of ‘Eavy Metal Studio-painted minis. If you haven’t already started on your Stormcast Eternals, this will leave you reaching for that pot of Retributor Armour.

Last but not least, Issue 14 introduces the Ogor Mawtribes before explaining in more detail the tenuous bonds holding together the forces of Order. There’s a brief build and paint guide for the Man-Skewer Boltboyz, and then a thorough playthrough for some of your collected units.

Miniatures

There are five miniatures available in this month’s Stormbringer delivery – and some of them are pretty nice.

First up we have the Beast-Skewer Killbow – a huge, ballista-like projectile-thrower on a partially sculpted base.

Whilst a touch fiddly to build at times (there are a couple of fiddly ropes that are quite fragile that need to be attached), the end result with this model is quite impressive. There’s a huge amount of detail on this figure – especially in the three grots who are helping the Kruleboy man the weapon. The semi-sculpted base is nice too, and really helps set the scene for this miniature.

Next up, more shooty orruks, just a little bit smaller. Three Man-Skewer Boltboyz.

Different to the three chaps who were originally released with the Dominion box a couple of years back, but I do think I prefer these. The addition of the banner and a few extra detials on the armour and weapons really helps set these guys apart – and the rough, untreated wood texture sculpted onto the weapons is perfect.

Finally, we have the Stormstrike Chariot.

Another seriously impressive model (so early in the collection, too!) the Stormstrike Chariot is one that will be delighting collectors the world over. Another really impressive model covered in details, this figure is not only capable of carving a path across the battlefield, it is also a masterwork in sculpting and will be a joy to paint.

Paints and Tools

In order to ensure you can keep painting all your new models, this month’s Stormbringer delivery comes with two more paints: Wraithbone and Mephiston Red.

Whilst Mephiston Red is a hobby desk staple, and one that manages to sneak its way onto just about every miniature I paint, Wriathbone is a bit more situationally useful. Thin for a base paint, it’s best used (in my opinion, at least) being mixed with flesh colours to help create realistic skin tones.

Failing that, as the name suggests, it’s a good starting point for some bright, bleached bones too!

Warhammer Age of Sigmar Stormbringer Delivery 4: Issues 11-14 Review – Final Thoughts

ProsCons
Great models
Really good savings
Not all that many models, and not a huge amount of variation across them either

The only thing that Delivery 4 lacks is a touch of diversity. Whilst the models available this month are A) great and B) super cheap when compared to their retail prices, the fact that the majority of them are ultimately Kruleboyz with crossbows is about the only criticism that can be levelled at this month’s selection.

In truth, even dragging that criticism out feels like clutching at straws and searching for something to nit-pick. The Beast-Skewer Killbow and Stormstrike chariot are marvellous models that will leave collectors introducing themselves to Warhammer by way of the Partworks subscription floored, and the trip of Man-Skewer Boltboyz, whilst perhaps not as impressive by directr comparison, are still nice models of high retail value that are very easy to build.

Ultimately, with the whacking great savings to be had this month, this is a tough collection to criticise.
