Last Updated on mai 22, 2023 by FauxHammer

Hey all, as you probably know by now, not only do I have a day job and family, and a part-time role running FauxHammer.com. but now a healthy and growing YouTue channel covering 3D printers. The crossover between these two hobbies is steadily merging into one as printers become easier to use and far more detailed. Well, let me take this quick moment to introduce the new Anycubic Photon Mono M5s.

Anycubic Releases Photon Mono M5s – Tech Specs

I’m not going to cover everything, so let’s just look at the main details you will want to know about

  • 10.1-inch LCD (Print more minis in one go)
  • 218x123x200mm print area (It’s not quite as tall as previous 10″printers, but do you need height?)
  • 11,520 x 5,120px Resolution (each screen pixel is only 19µm – 3µm smaller than the previous leader)

So basically it’s got a really-decent build area, but thanks to the resolution of the screen, it is now much higher in X/Y resolution than any other printer yet released.

Personally, I find the 10″ build plaets perfect for my needs as a miniature printer. It’s not too big that it’s cumbersome, but still large enough to print the equivalent of a Combat patrol in miniatures in a single print run.

Anycubic Releases Photon Mono M5s – How good is it!

We are still awaiting our test model at FauxHammer.com, but on spec alone, we can see this is a high-resolution unit.

Now, in saying that. I;ve said numerous times and even shown that we are operating now beyond the point of deminishing returns. With most budget resins, you will not be abl to tell much of a print quality difference between a 22µm and a 35µm printer. So you won’t see anything more here. See below for details.

To get the most out of these higher detailed printers, you need specific details resins, which are typpically much sharper in details, but much more brittle. So for miniatures, these make great display pieces, but terrible tabletop pieces, becasue small components can snap easily due to how brittle those resins typically are.

Additionally this touts a new light-arry, a release film which takes less force to remove the resin and much faster build plate movemnet speeds. The only printer I’ve tested so far with these new and Improved sspeeds is the Creality Halot Mage Pro. Which was so fast it was too fast. With the above mentioned, more detailed resisn, it would tear that resin from the build plate due to the excessive speed. the only way to compensate was to significantly overexpose the resin, which reduces detail on models – ruining any benefit that resolution gave.

The problem with the Creality model though, is that typically slow speeds were simply not possible on that z-axis motor. So i;m looing forward to test the lowest speed available on the Mono 5s

Anycubic Releases Photon Mono M5s – Should you get one?

In summary, as mentioned above, there’s likely little benefit in this new, incredibly hight, resolution. So if you have a modern 10″ printer. I’d say there’s little avlue in upgrading. But if you are looking for a new printer anyway with a budget of Sub $500. yeah, this one is likely gonna be your best bet. The previously recomended Anycubic 10″ printer, the M3 Premium. has been cdiscontinued now. thois repalaces it.

But also, they have an early bird preorder deal on this. for the first 3 days you can get it for only $399. and nother $50 off that if you buy a $60 for only $10
See the Anycubic site for more details.
