Warhammer 40,000 Imperium Delivery 16: Issues 59-62 Review – Introduction

First off, we’re sorry.

We’ve been having some scheduling issues here at FauxHammer.com over the last month or so, so our write-ups of Delivery 14 and Delivery 15 were quite severely delayed. We are very sorry about this, but we’re working our way to getting back on track with things now.

So, without any further ado, let’s get stuck into Delivery 16 and see what the good folks at Hachette Partworks will be dropping onto their subscribers’ doorsteps this month.

Warhammer 40,000 Imperium Delivery 16: Issues 59-62 Review: Contents

Here’s a little pile of everything your subscription will net you this month. We have the usual spread of magazines and fold-out supplement, a couple of paints and a handful of models – one of which fills everyone here at FauxHammer.com with dread.

But more on that in a moment. First, we’ll take a quick look at the magazines and their contents this month.

The Magazines: Issues 59-62

Issue 59 furnishes buyers with the first part of the sprue they need for their Priamris Outriders, as well as a bit more background info on close-quarters Space Marines.

Warhammer 40,000 Imperium Delivery 16 Issue 59

Sandwiched between an entry about Ephrael Stern and her Aeldari companion Kyganil, and the aforementioned couple of pages about how Space Marines like to whack things is even a little lore about Chaos Space Marines. That’s not all, there are new rules and stratagems found in the back of the magazine, along with your Outriders build guide – and even a short story to keep you all reading.

With the Outriders build guide in the previous magazine, Issue 60 takes advantage of the free pages to furnish you with a fairly extensive painting guide for your (presumably freshly assembled?) Space Marines on bikes.

Warhammer 40,000 Imperium Delivery 16 Issue 60

The last third or so of the magazine is dedicated to new rules, new tutorials, and new datasheets for your Outriders.

Things get a big dark in Issue 61, with new lore about the Inquisition, the Manask System, and a short stories entitled “The Festering Hordes”. I bet you can’t guess what that’s about.

Warhammer 40,000 Imperium Delivery 16 Issue 61

Surprisingly, given how much of a faff it is to assemble, the Necron Tomb Blade assembly guide only takes up two pages, so there’s a relatively thorough painting guide abutting it. Finally, the rest of the magazine – which is quite a substantial amount of it – is given over to new rules. There are faction rules for both Necrons and Adepta Sororitas, including tutorials for both, as well as notes on Battle Forged armies, and finally a new mission for you to have a go at.

And if that wasn’t enough new rules and ways to play for you, this month’s fold-out entry is also dedicated to new rules, new missions, and new ways to play. This one really will keep you busy!

Finally, we arrive at Issue 62, which as the cover may suggest, is stuffed to the gills with Space Marine-based content, including yet another short story (which is actually quite long by Imperium standards) – this one focusing on the Dark Angels.

There’s a brief painting guide using your new paints, designed to get your models up to date should yopu be painting along with the magazines. Finally, there are a few more sides dedicated to getting you rolling dice and waging miniaturised war across your tabletop at the end of the magazine.

miniature

If I never see another Tomb Blade at any point during the remainder of my days, it’ll be too soon.

I cannot vocalise how much I despise this miniature (or miniatures – as this is the third one we’ve received now). What started as a fairly powerful dislike back in Delivery 10 has turned into a vehement, entrenched and passionate hatred over the course of building three of these horrible little things.

Warhammer 40,000 Imperium Delivery 16 Contents Final Tomb Blade

Needlessly fiddly, the process is complicated by shoddy checking on Hachette’s part: at two points in the process (when attaching the vents to the back of the flaying machine and the larger armour plates that extend out of the central crescent) the parts are misnumbered and need to be attached the other way around to how they are shown.

I literally have nothing positive to say about this miniature. I hate it. I’m simple relieved we won’t be getting any more of these.

In stark contrast to the Tomb Blade, the Primaris Outriders – swole dudes on swoler motercycles – both look freakin’ awesome and are easy to put together.

Warhammer 40,000 Imperium Delivery 16 Contents Outriders

Big, tactile shapes and not too many components to wrestle with, the trio of biker dudes you receive across issues 59 and 60 are pretty great – aside from one rather large issue: gaps. Take as look at these two unhappy chappies below. See the huge seam-like gaps running the length of their bikes? Yeah.

Warhammer 40,000 Imperium Delivery 16 Contents Outriders Gaps

In fact, so bad are the gaps on the Primaris Outriders that back when Ninth Edition was first released and the Era Indomitus began with the appropriately-named Indomitus box, Ross took it upon himself to pen our popular How to fill Gaps & Seams on Miniatures guide, which remains to this day one of the most popular article we’ve ever put out.

If you’ve suffered the same fate as I have with any of your Outriders, head over to Ross’ excellent guide on how to get rid of these chasm-like gaps on your bikes.

Vernici e strumenti per hobby

This month, the two paints that subscribers will receive with their delivery are firm fan favourites. Evil Sunz Scarlet and Calgar Blue.

Warhammer 40,000 Imperium Delivery 16 Contents Paints (2)

Ideal for that mid-tone highlight, Evil Sunz Scarlet and Calgar Blue will be vital additions to the hobby arsenals of anyone painting their Space Marines as Either Ultramarines or Blood Angels.

In the example below, I’ve used Calgar Blue as a drybrush over a base of Macragge Blue on the Ultramarines’ armour. I’ve also used it as a thick edge highlight on the red helmet of the company sergeant – though that’s not so clear on the image below. So…

Warhammer 40,000 Imperium Delivery 16 Evil Calgar Blue Example

…Here’s a dreadnought that took a thorough drybrysuhing of Evil Sunz Scarlet.

Warhammer 40,000 Imperium Delivery 16 Evil Sunz Scarlet Example

Con Mephiston Red as a basecoat, a drybrush of Evil Sunz Scarlet really helps some of the raised and otherwise stand-out forms of this miniature pop. It gives a sense of depth of colour and is a really easy way to get a basic highlight.

Warhammer 40,000 Imperium Delivery 16: Issues 59-62 Review – Final Thoughts

ProfessionistiContro
Depending on luck of the draw, you may find yourself flush with a trio of super cool Primaris Outriders
Really useful paints
Buoni risparmi
Necron Tomb Blade is a horrible model (but at least they’re done now)
Primaris Outriders might have some (pretty awful) gaps and seams on them

Delivery 16 is a bit of a game of two halves.

The good: first, the paints are useful and will find a worthy home in any hobby arsenal. The Primaris Outriders are really cool models that are fairly straightforward to assemble, but you may find yourselves left with some truly beastly gaps and seams on the bodies of the bikes. Whilst we have our How to fill Gaps & Seams on Miniatures article primed and ready to go, it would be nice if you didn’t have to resort to this in the first place.

The Necron Tomb Blade is an exercise in patience and self-restraint. It’s not pleasant to put together and will more than likely just anger you. The model you’re left with at the end of the process isn’t even all that cool anyway: it’s just some robotic skeleton sitting in some cyberpunk/art deco office chair with a spotlight dangling off the bottom of it.

So, there are positives, but a lot of the time these are balanced with negatives. Still, if you’re after Outriders or (for some reason) a Tomb Blade there are some savings to be had here that are hard to argue with.
