Warhammer 40,000 Imperium Delivery 23: Issues 87-90 Review – Introduction

Well, here we are. The end of the line.

23 deliveries across 2021, 2022 and now 2023, the Warhammer 40,000: Imperium collection has been something quite special, But it could not go on indefinitely, and May 2023 sees the collection come to a close. Running an additional 10 issues thanks to its insane popularity, Imperium has been a resounding success for both Hachette (and on a somewhat smaller scale, ourselves here at FauxHammer.com).

The collection has introduced tens of thousands of brand-new hobbyists to the worlds of Warhammer, and furnished just as many veterans with enough plastic miniatures and models to reinforce their existing collections to a massive degree. It’s been a massive hit for us here at FauxHammer.com, allowing us to produce some of our most popular articles ever, and introducing more of you than ever before to our little community – if you haven’t already, head over to our Discord channel to get in on the action!

But for now, let’s take one last dive into Warhammer 40,000: Imperium.

Warhammer 40,000 Imperium Delivery 23: Issues 87-90 Review – Contents

Going out with a bang, Warhammer 40,000: Imperium nets us a handful of fun and high-value models. Here’s everything:

Warhammer 40,000 Imperium Delivery 23 Issues 87-90 All

You know the drill by now. Let’s make a start with a spoiler-free look at the magazines themselves,

The Magazines

Alongside providing purchasers with the second of three sprues you need to make your Primaris Redemptor Dreadnought (you’ve still got sprue 1 from last month, right?), your build guide for this monstrous war-machine, and a new campaign mission, Issue 87 also takes you on a deep-dive into the Warhammer 40,000 universe.

Warhammer 40,000 Imperium Delivery 23 Issues 87-90 Issue 87

We’ve got the Sabbat Worlds campaign. We’ve got Gaunt’s Ghosts. We’ve got plenty of stuff about chaos (including a short story), and even a few sides about the Fulminators and Howling Griffons, should you still be unsure what colour to paint your space marines (it’s Dark Angels green, by the way).

Issue 88 follows suit with a varied overview of lore – including a section on Tyranid weaponry – and another short story. Most importantly, however, is the painting guide for your new Primaris Redemptor Dreadnought.

Warhammer 40,000 Imperium Delivery 23 Issues 87-90 Issue 88

Because, dear reader, sprue 3 or 3 arrives with Issue 88. Grab your sprue cutters and glue and get building!

As you may suspect, Issue 89 is something of a love letter to Lord Inquisitor Kyria Draxus – the character whom buyers of this issue will find they now have a miniature of.

Featuring in a short story of her own, Draxus also comes with a full build guide, a paint guide, and her own datasheet so you can get her onto the battlefield ASAP.

Issue 89’s fold-out is a bit of an odd one, however. Providing something of a debrief on the War in the Rasmus system (that’s the Campaign you’ve been fighting with your miniatures, yeah? Yeah?) , it also comes with a “Hobby Decision Maker” flow chart – which is designed to assist you in continuing with Warhammer even now the magazine has come to an end.

Last but certainly not least, we arrive at Issue 90. Illuminator Szeras dominates this magazine, shoving aside any potential lore inserts to make room for his massive build and paint guide.

There is also one final tutorial in issue 90 designed to help you understand how to play with a unit as powerful as Szeras, so if gaming is your thing make sure you check it out.

Miniatures

Oh boy, I’ve been waiting for this one. The first of the three sprues needed to build the Primaris Redemptor Dreadnought, which arrived with the previous delivery, has been sitting on my hobby desk looking at me for the last month. I’ve been desperate to get this guy built!

And here he is.

Warhammer 40,000 Imperium Delivery 23 Issues 87-90 Primaris Redemptor Dreadnought

Now, I love dreadnoughts. I’ve got three 40K dreads now, and three Horus Heresy-era dreads. I’d forgotten, however, that there are a few tricky build points with the Primaris Redemptor Dreadnought – all of which focus around its legs.

You’ll be advised to not stick certain components where the two legs join to the dreadnought’s hips together because the legs need to be slotted and pivoted into the correct position. Whilst the instructions make it look easy, this is quite tough to do. Ensure you take plenty of time dry-fitting the legs and making sure the little pistons that slot into its inner thighs are in place before you start applying glue.

But once it’s together, what a fab model. Guilliman – the original figure the collection was supposed to end on – was always going to be a tough act to follow, but the Redemptor Dreadnought certainly manages.

Here’s the previous Primaris Redemptor Dreadnought I painted for my own collection. Note I used slightly different weapons options for it this time around.

Oh, yeah. Right. The other figures.

Next up we have Lord Inquisitor Kyria Draxus – a super easy-to-build miniature with bags of details and heaps of character.

Warhammer 40,000 Imperium Delivery 23 Issues 87-90 Inquisitor Draxus

Wielding an Aeldari weapon and wearing the skull of a slain alien on her shoulder, this inquisitor is begging for a coat of paint, and will make a marvellous test for Imperium collectors to see just how much they’ve learned over the course of the series. That she can be built in about ten seconds is also a huge bonus.

Finally, we arrive at Necron Big Bad, Illuminator Szeras. This twisted, insectoid robo-psycho is a truly magnificent miniature to behold.

But.

Warhammer 40,000 Imperium Delivery 23 Issues 87-90 Illuminator Szeras

Szeras is a cauchemar to assemble. With many overlapping, intersecting and incredibly fragile parts, Szeras requires the patience of a saint to assemble. He’s still nowhere near as bad as those wretched flayed ones from Delivery 5, but I do have to admit, I’m quite glad I’m not going to have to build another Necron model for a while.

It’s a good job he makes for such an impressive miniature. When the Necron range received its refresh at the start of Ninth Edition (…and here we are, now with Tenth likely only a few months away), the then-archaic-looking Necrons were in desperate need of a facelift. Szeras is very much testament to just how good Necron models look – but, of course, bears the Necron tough-to-build curse.

And that’s it. We’re done. Those are all the models for the Warhammer 40,000: Imperium collection.

Which was your favourite? How much have you built and painted? What model made your blood boil and made you wish you’d never started Warhammer and why was it those accursed Flayed Ones?!

…Let us know in the comments! We’d love to hear your feedback!

Warhammer 40,000 Imperium Delivery 23: Issues 87-90 Review – Final Thoughts

PourContre
Did someone say Primaris Redemptor Dreadnought?
Cool Necron dude and interesting Inquisitor figure
…No more Imperium :(

Warhammer 40,000: Imperium’s final delivery leaves us on a high. With an indomitable Primaris Redemptor Dreadnought, a deadly Necron hero (villain?), and an implacable Imperial agent the focus of the final few issues, we’re left with our last injection of high-value, high-savings miniatures.

Sure, both the Dreadnought and Szeras are a bit fiddly to build at points, but if you’ve made it to the end of the Warhammer 40,000: Imperium collection and you’ve built everything along the way, you shouldn’t have too many problems or encounter any difficulties you can’t deal with.

But that’s it. We’re done.

We’re at the end of our Warhammer 40,000: Imperium coverage. We’ve covered every release, every issue, every magazine and model for your information and viewing pleasure – and I have to admit, I’m a little sad that it’s over.

There’s still more partworks madness taking placde here at FauxHammer.com by way of Warhammer Stormbringer, which we’ll be providing the same sort of coverage for as we have done for Warhammer 40,000: Imperium. Make sure to stick around and check out our social media pages if you want all the details on Hachette’s latest Warhammer collection.

But as far as Warhammer 40,000: Imperium is concerned, that’s us signing off.

So from myself, Ross and Jordan: thanks for coming along on this wild ride with us. You’re all awesome, and we can’t say how much we appreciate you all.
